SHE WRITES:
There are 2 kinds of train going to Shanghai from our place, the fast train and the regular train. The regular train takes an hour, people inside are smoking, very crowded but costs only 13RMB (about US$2). The fast train however takes 45 minutes, people are not smoking, not so crowded as each one has a reserved seat but cost 35RMB (approximately US$5). My husband prefers the regular train because the time difference is not that big and he's more concerned of the cost. So that qualifies him for the practicality side. On the other hand, my friend Cathy prefers the fast train because it's more convenient - she can sit well and it's really clean. There was even a time that she paid for our ticket just so we all ride the fast train and not the regular train. I'm more of an in-between person. Sometimes I'm practical but other times, it makes sense choosing convenience.
How about you? Are you for convenience or practicality?

A. convenience
garbo: I am a flexible person. But if I were to choose, I'd rather go for convenience. I belive that things around us were invented and improved to make life more convenient.
onchie: I would prefer convenience in this situation. I think the pros outweighed the cons. As a non-smoker, I would rather pay more, than sacrifice my health.
B. practicality
C. others (pls. specify)
lee: I'm a mix, too. I decide on a case by case basis.

I am a flexible person.Convenience and practicality do not go hand-in-hand. In fact, oftentimes they are in conflict. But it depends on the situation and the social status of a person. But if I were to choose, I'd rather go for convenience. I belive that things around us were invented and improved to make life more convenient.

Though I am more of a pragmatic person, I would prefer convenience in this situation. I think the pros outweighed the cons. As a non-smoker, I would rather pay more, than sacrifice my health.
LiveStrong, live at the moment!...
when we base the situation on what you have said, I think I will choose convenience. if i can afford it, why not?
after all, the sickness i may get from second hand smoke and the germs from other passengers may well outweigh the costs in the future.
unless of course the train is open, like the jeepneys in bacolod. lol
i am a mixed kind of person, so C. it really depends on the situation. i can be practical and i can go for convenience. especially that after weighing the pros and cons, one outweighs the other.
for example. i will buy a box of milk in the nearby store that costs P10 more than in the grocery, but in the latter i will have to pay my round trip fare of p16. plus the travel time. weighing will actually tell us which is the better option.
I'm pretty flexible. In all honesty, I would be asking whoever I was with what THEY preferred, and I would do what they wanted to do. I'm pretty laid back and I basically hate making decisions. LOL
As a dog I tend to go for convenience - I agree with garbobagahe's post. My mum, however, goes for convenience in most instances until it comes to food. Mum doesn't 'do' the convenience foods that much, because mum likes to know what she's eating so she likes to cook stuff from fresh. She wonders if life is getting too convenient, sometimes, and that we might be losing a certain quality of life in the process.
PS: I preferred the old look of your blog, found this one not so easy to navigate for some reason. But I'm just a dog so what do I know?
hmmmm...with the cost of living these days practicality would seem the better choice. You would save $3.00 a day riding the more crowded smoke filled train. But in the long run, would the smoke be healthy for your physical well being. I know it would give me a headache and I would not want my clothes to smell for the rest of the day. Convenience would not be the reason I would pick the faster train, but to me it would be wiser for my health...especially since I have a heart condition.
I'd have to say that I'm more of an in-between person. I generally opt for efficiency - at times, that tends to drive others batty. And I can't be efficient, I'd probably then opt for convenience over practicality.
I'll usually go for convenience unless the price seems too high. Sometimes it is worth more to have it a little easier. But I'd have to decide on each situation at the time. Much depends on my mood and my pocketbook at the time.
I would go for convenience, my hubby would choose practicality. We have ridden a train in china that was a 36 hr trip, very smoky, loud, crowded!
