IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A RIGHTEOUS KILL?

SHE WRITES:

Several nights ago my hubby and I watched a movie entitled RIGHTEOUS KILL (stars: Deniro and Pacino). They're detectives and partners in the NYPD for 30 years. However, there came a time when they put judgement in their own hands. Cases that have been dismissed because the accused either had money or influence was not valid for them. So if they find the accused guilty, even if the court says he's not, they either plant evidence and have them imprisoned or the worst, killed them. They call it a righteous kill because they don't want those bad people to have more victims. In effect, by killing those "evil men" they do society a great service...

In real life, picture this: a burglar breaks into your house, takes your child, your wife, your husband or your parent as hostage and will actually kill him or her. Let's say you only have 2 choices at hand: Kill the robber OR have your loved one get killed. This is a tough situation for me and I would say I may not be able to think straight when that situation arises. As a human, my first instict is survival...As a believer, the Bible says DO NOT MURDER. I am leaning towards kill the criminal because as a mother, I would give my life for my son. The law of the land will consider it self defense and I probably won't go to prison for it. But will it be considered a RIGHTEOUS KILL?

What do you think? Is there such as thing as a RIGHTEOUS KILL?

A. Yes, there is
B. No, there isn't
C. Others (pls. specify)

Good grief! You are getting into some heavy-duty stuff here! I don't know about the ethics and morality but I do know that I would probably kill someone who was going to kill my loved one. I hope I am never in that position.

One of my absolute all-time favorite TV shows is "Dexter." He is a serial killer who tries to control his urges by only murdering those who deserve it. This is his code for selecting his kills. It is funny how you really kind of root for him and like him so much. Kind of muddies up how you feel. But of course that is a TV show and not real life. But it did seem a bit related to the movie you described.

These questions are not easy ones. If killing the burglar was what was necessary to stop him killing someone else, I would do it. But I am against the death penalty so if he had killed someone I would argue against killing him for it.

Wow - you are getting into difficult questions. I have to say that in a situation like this there is such a thing as a righteous kill, but it would be awful to do it and it would be a terrible thing to have to live with.

Jeeeez what a loaded question! I would have to say, I think if push came to shove I think there's not a lot I wouldn't do for my loved ones. How I'd feel about myself after the fact, I have no idea.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. :)

Wow...I don't think anyone would be thinking rationally in a situation such as the one you posed. Any mom would give her life for her child to live or take the life of someone who threated to kill her child if there was no othe option. All I can say is, God does work everything for the good for those who love Him...(Romans 8:28). He is a might God. A graceful God. A forgiving God, because Jesus stands in the gap for us!

wow! that is tough!

really. i can't say for sure now, because thankfully, i am not in that situation. but when fear and panic arises, we tend to act differently.

i really have no idea what i will do...or am capable of doing.

this is a toughie alright. i don't know, really. but i did read a christian book, where the woman was supposed to be raped. when the attacker came to her, she declared out loud, i am a christian. etc. etc...she claimed the promises of christ. the guy stopped, as if the evil influence on him was removed. and then they talked, and she was able to share the gospel to him. what a great testimony!

The adrenaline and catecholamine surge in me would force me to protect my family and choose A, all the while mumbling and praying like Jehosaphat...

Then I'd use that "easier to get forgiveness than permission" theory.

Tough question. Even tougher word verification! Missed it twice!

This is a bit deep for a dog. But without a shadow of a doubt I would kill anyone who tried to kill my mum, AND I'd not feel guilty about it afterwards. I know for definite that mum WOULD kill anyone who tried to kill either Uncle Hugh or me. Mum would do anything to protect her loved ones.

I've read this quote from Conversations With God:

"What good is a life if it caused nothing but grief? And how sorrowful it is to lose a life if it saved thousands?"

...I'm not quite sure with the exact words...

I want to say NO, it is never right to kill, but... I work with reptiles and have a passion for them, yet will advise people that if it is a case of kill or be killed, then kill the snake. I know an animal is different to humans, but if it is the case of kill or be killed in the moment (assuming you can kill him/her) I would go with protecting myself and family. If it is possible to stop them in some way and get away, then I would rather take that option, and I could never condone a death penalty...
I think I am relatively macho, for a girl (I do pick up big heavy pythons and handle crocodiles in my work) but suspect I would find it seriously difficult to kill a grown man unless I had a gun in my hand (and although I live in a country where many people think it is good to keep one, I don't.) If I did have a gun, shooting his leg would stop him, and allow us to get away and I would not have his life on my conscience!

While I don't belive in murder, etc. Ummm, yeah, if someone is going to kill my loved one because that person chose to break into my home or something of the sort, you better believe I'm going to at least seriously maim that individual if not kill them. There are some incidents where an eye for an eye is in order. So, don't threaten my life or the lives of those I love or even come close to it, because I will fight back with resolve. And equal force.

Very dark... I like.

Would I wanna kill someone who rapes his own daughter? I definitely would.

But then again, there are those who are against capital punishment.

I agree. Cutting off his genitals would be so much better. More fun too.

Thanks for coming by my blog and saying hi!

What a thought provoking question. My immediate reaction was that I would kill a robber that was threatening my family.

I think I could if it was to save a family member. But, you never know for sure till that happens, I think that might be self defense, I would not go looking for a fight.
