WHO INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST?

SHE WRITES:

I will only deal with one aspect and that is who made the greatest contribution when it comes to my self confidence - I would say my dad. I used to be very shy (people who personally know me will doubt this statement, but really, I was - shy). During parties, I would ask my dad to get my food because I was so shy to go near the table and be seen by a lot of people. However, in one of the parties we attended Papa (how I call my dad) asked me to look at everyone else from a distance and asked me what's the difference with those people getting their food and me hiding on my seat. He asked if I had a nose, ears, eyes and etc. I said YES to all of his questions... Then he pointed out that there's nothing to be ashamed of because I'm no different - I eat what they eat and I have what they have. On and on he went telling me that I have a pretty face and a very nice smile so I shouldn't hide :o) Very simple words but to my innocent mind - it was a lesson I remembered my whole life. Whenever I feel ugly or unsure of myself, I'd think of my dad - that he sees me pretty and that he thinks I'm smart and talented and on and on - then all my insecurities go away.

Now, my husband and some really close friends always tell me I'm shameless :o) I don't know if it's a nice comment or a bad one because it's actually one trait Joey wants our kids to have - unashamed! hihi...

How about you? Who influenced you the most in a certain aspect of your being YOU?

A. Mom and/ Dad
B. A friend
C. Others (pls. specify)

I'd have to say that both my Mother and Father influenced me. I definitely see both of them in the way I am and how I approach things.

As I've gotten older, I have learned that it is necessary to find a way to temper their influences, though. In doing that, it sometmes amazes me that they stayed married until my mother passed. And I also continue to have an evolving view of my father and how he interacted with my mother.

It's got to be my mum. She's all I've known in my short life, although I must admit that Uncle Hugh has an influence too - not sure if it's a good one though - he taught me to crash out on the sofa and watch daytime TV whilst eating Haribo Jellies - something he and I do when mum's away:)

your dad was wonderful to explain that to you like he did! I can see how he would be a big influence for you and self-esteem!

I'm going to answer my mom with the aspect of a strong work ethic. She worked hard and she passed that on to us to work hard and to always try to go to work and not unnecessarily call in sick, etc

but the one who overall influenced me is of course our Lord and Savior! He has taught me so much of how to live a life that glorifies him and not me; for that I'll always be grateful!

I honestly do not know. I guess it is a combination of everyone I know. I know as a child I was also shy but I guess growing and maturing I changed. I really can identify where or when. Maybe it was the books, "When I say no, I feel guilty" or "I'm OK, You're OK"
That is a good question to ponder....

How do you know? That is a difficult question. Parents? Grandparents? Relatives? Teachers? Neighbours? School mates? Workmates? Spouse?

How do you decide which is most influential? They all would have been at certain times.

Ultimately I think the answer is "me" - I am the final filter, I decide what I take on board and what I dismiss as not my thing.

I guess my dad ... he gave me my love of reading, my education in rock and roll (which came in handy quite a few times) and the phrase that I always use when having a tough time: Don't let the bastards grind you down.

It has to be my mom and my principal in high school.

I would have to say my Grandfather. It still brings tears to my eyes when I think about him. He died when I was 13 years old. I hardly had a chance to know him, but the years I did were probably the best years of my life. He was more like a father to me then my own father was. If he had lived longer I would have probably moved to Washington to live with my grandparents and had a completely different life. He was also the one who bought me a journal and encouraged me to write. You could say he started my writing frenzy.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting today!
Your blog is great, I really like the concept you have here.
Influence...hmmm. My parents did a great job of providing a good home and taught me values, but without a doubt I have to say that the person who taught me all about self conficence would be my cousin Beth. Beth taught me to stand tall (I'm 5'10" and she's 6'), be thankful and kind...and most of all, count my blessings.

I was always like you ~ I didn't want to walk across a room because I thought everyone was looking at me! I felt that way many years into my adulthood. My husband helped me realize that I did not need to feel ashamed of the way I perceived myself and that I could hold my own with the best of them!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful relation with your Dad. He was a wise man.

shy?????? lol

anyway, hmmm...perhaps my greatest influence would be Jesus. the traits that i never thought i had before started showing when i started to emulate the walk of Christ here on earth. well that doesn't mean i am already perfect, of course.

my husband comes second. i am usually very impulsive and temperamental, but my husband is the opposite. he is actually the one who tempers me. :-)

I never knew my dad, so I would have to say my mum and my grandmother. And I would also say Yeshua. What Would Jesus Do? isn't just a saying for me, but my life motto.
